Writing prompt

1. Why have some countries donated more in aid to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan than others?

There are several factors that affect the amount of donation to the victims of Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines

a) The economy of one country (Higher GDP countries tend to give out more donation)
b) Relationship between the Philippines (ex. USA is allied with the Philippines and gave the most donation while, China gave out the least donation since they are having conflict with Philippines for East China sea)
c) By seeing the general pattern of the donation. People that are neighboring to the Philippines tend to donate more than countries that are far away. ( it is because they want to have closer relationships with the Philippines)

2. How does the aid being sent to victims of Typhoon Haiyan represent the following:

altruism
There are about 10,000 people dead because of this natural disaster it is too great number that single country can handle. Therefore,  other countries are helping out to support the Philippines

geopolitics
Philippines will also help when other countries face similar problems if they aid the Philippines now. Furthermore, country like China can use this aid for the negotiation of East China Sea problems.

Disaster Reflection

How does the devastation brought from Typhoon Haiyan make you feel?

The recent attack of the Typhoon Haiyan brought disastrous experience to people. I may not be directly affected by the typhoon but my feeling is not so much different from people who actually lost their home, family and friends. I heard that about 10,000 people died from this typhoon and most of them are in developing regions of the Philippines.

How should people prepare for and respond to disasters like Typhoon Haiyan?

There must be strong government involvement to Typhoon Haiyan. There should be developed equipment to predict typhoon's route in order to minimize the affect of the typhoon. Hundreds of more lives  could be saved if there was appropriate action taken. Also government should save foods and clean water to distribute to people whenever there is a typhoon.

Why do people live in vulnerable areas?
People live in vulnerable areas because of the disparities between rich and poor in the Philippines. Regions that are relevantly safe from natural disasters are taken by the rich people. Therefore, the price of the house is extremely high that most people in the Philippines could not afford it.
